Odette was born and raised in Mexico City, and relocated with her family to Toronto at the age of 11 in 1999. In 2012 she graduated with a Bachelor in Design from the Faculty of Communications and Design (FCAD) at Toronto Metropolitan University, where she studied Fashion Communications.
Odette is a material artist, illustrator and self-taught non-electric tattooer. In 2018 she co-founded Always, an inclusive tattoo studio that aims to foster creativity, community, and a comfortable space for all bodies.
Exploring a range of mediums and surfaces, Odette’s work is inspired by Latin American folklore, by vintage objects and ornaments, and by her son Sol who reminds her of the playfulness of childhood arts and crafts. Her areas of focus include, illustration on paper (using primarily marker, wax crayons and pencil crayons), permanent ink on skin (via non-electric tattooing), and earthware ceramics (both hand-building & wheel throwing). She also enjoys playing with organic textiles and reclaimed beads to make garments, tapestries, and small ornaments.
As an object creator and curator she enjoys making practical objects as well as impractical pieces that bring a sense of joy and comfort into the spaces we inhabit. Odette’s encourages viewers to open themselves to embracing imperfections and finding beauty in the process work.
